MARCHING/Drum
Corp International (DCI) SITES
Drum Corp
International (DCI)
Drum
Corps International (DCI), formed in 1972, is the non-profit
governing body operating the North American drum and bugle corps
circuit for junior corps, whose members are between the ages of 14
and 22. The primary purpose of DCI corps is their competitive
summer tour, consisting of DCI-sanctioned competitions throughout
the United States and Canada, culminating in August with the
week-long DCI World Championships. Many other drum corps
associations around the world are based upon DCI. It continues a
tradition of exceptionally high-quality drum corps, with membership
in the top corps highly sought after and extremely competitive,
attracting the interest of potential members from many countries.
DCI splits corps into 3 divisions. Corps from all 3 divisions often
compete together at smaller shows, but are still ranked separately
by the DCI judging system. www.dci.org
Blue Devils
The Blue
Devils Drum and Bugle Corps is a Division I drum and bugle corps
based in Concord, California, was founded in 1970, and is a member
corps of DCI. The Blue Devils (sometimes just "the Devils" or "BD")
are the most successful corps of the DCI era, with a total of
eleven world champion titles to their name over the four decades of
DCI's existence. In 1976 they won their first DCI title and since
then they have never placed out of the top five corps at finals,
the only corps to lay claim to this amazing streak. The Devils have
long stuck to jazz and Latin repertoires, including their famous
use of the Channel One
Suite (at the time of its
performance in 1976, the longest single piece ever performed in the
DCI circuit), as well as such notable repertoires as the music of
Chick Corea and Chuck Mangione. As a result of their musical style
choices, the Devils are the corps most associated with jazz.

Mandarins
The Mandarins Drum and Bugle Corps are a Division
I drum and bugle corps based in Sacramento, California, were
founded in 1963, and are a member corps of DCI. The Mandarins were
originally founded as the Ye Wah drum and lyre corps, and were
renamed the Mandarins Drum and Bugle Corps in 1967. Their first
appearance at the DCI championships was in 1978. One of five
division I DCI corps from California, the Mandarins are the only
DCI member corps to have heritage in an Asian youth organization.
The Mandarins are a highly accomplished corps in DCI's Division
II/III circuit, and currently compete in Division I. They have been
DCI Division III world champions seven times, Division II champions
one time, and Division I members since 2002. The Mandarins have
also received the Spirit of Disney award two times. www.mandarins.org
Cavaliers
The
Cavaliers are a Division I drum and bugle corps based in Rosemont,
Illinois, and were founded in 1948. Known to fans as the "Cavies"
and the "Green Machine," the Cavaliers are one of only two all-male
corps in the activity, the other being the Madison Scouts. Perhaps
the most visually dynamic corps, the Cavaliers use the raw
athleticism of their members to the fullest extent possible, and
have been pioneering forces in pushing the limit of high speed
marching drill. www.cavaliers.org
Phantom
Regiment
The
Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps are a Division I drum and
bugle corps based in Rockford, Illinois and founded in 1956. Often
just "Phantom" or "the Regiment", the corps is a long-standing DCI
member corps and a fan favorite. Phantom Regiment's streak of 32
consecutive DCI championship finals appearances (a record shared
with the Concord Blue Devils) is second only to long-time rival
Santa Clara Vanguard. Phantom Regiment has been aggressive in
bringing to the field challenging classical music, including that
of Dmitri Shostakovich, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Antonin
Dvorak. One commentator noted that the corps is "drum corps'
classical music identity." www.regiment.org
Renegades
The
Renegades (from San Francisco, CA) made their DCI debut in July
1999. In 2000, the Renegades fielded an expanded corps, which were
received with standing ovations at every show. The year culminated
with a proclamation by the San Francisco Mayor honoring the
Renegades as The Official Drum & Bugle Corps of the City of San
Francisco. www.renegades.org
Star of
Indiana
The Star
of Indiana Drum and Bugle Corps was a Division I drum and bugle
corps based out of Bloomington, Indiana and was a member of DCI. It
was a competitive corps from 1985 to 1993. Star of Indiana made
finals the first year of its existence and every year thereafter,
an accomplishment unmatched by any corps of its era. After the 1993
season (2nd place with a 97.3), they left the competitive marching
circuit. They formed the Broadway show Blast!, a marching
production on a theater stage rather than a football field.
